My dear readers. I recently made a YouTube video about my Top 5 favourite presser feet for my electrical domestic sewing machines. It was just a casual topic to share some of my personal thoughts with my subscribers and perhaps start a conversation.
While this blog is not generally for chitchat subjects, I feel it would be good to switch lanes sometimes and pause between our more technical drafting videos. This is similar to what I do with the Pattern drafting theory videos.
In the YouTube video, I generally shared my collection of presser feet while selecting the few I consider essential. It is like a list of feet I would choose if I had to buy them individually as I got most of my feet in box sets. Listed below are my final picks and why. I also selected my favourite for my vintage sewing machine, since they are similar.
My top 5 Presser feet (for now)
1: Adjustable Zipper Foot
This is for sewing on zippers. The notches on the sides of the foot allow your needle to sit very close to the zipper while you sew. There are different variations of the zipper foot, but I like this because it is adjustable and works well on concealed/invisible zippers. You can also use it for top stitching, edge stitching, and hard-to-reach areas since it is narrow.
2: Button Hole foot
This foot is a specialty foot for the sole purpose of making buttonholes. It is simply essential to me since I make garments that have button holes. Otherwise, you may never need this foot. But I think most of us will need to make button holes every so often.
3: Even Feed Foot
This foot provides your machine with an extra set of feeddogs above your fabric while sewing. This ensures that the fabric feeds evenly to prevent stretching, squishing or movement (when sewing multiple layers). It is great for quilting. You can also use it as your standard foot. The only drawback is that it is quite low on the machine and makes your sewing area feel constricted.
4: Narrow Hem Foot
This foot allows for the even folding and sewing of narrow hems. It is not the most essential on my list, but it has saved me hours of tedious sewing. It does have the disadvantage of working only on fine to medium weight fabrics and it doesn't work when sewing over seams. There is a variation for narrow rolled hems which has a rounded groove underneath the foot.
5: Gathering foot
This foot helps to gather or shirr fabric evenly. It also allows you to sew/attach your gathered piece to another piece at the same time that it is gathering. So, it is very handy. My only complaint is when it works, it works well, and when it doesn't, it simply doesn't work at all. It might have to do with the weight of the fabric and tension settings.
6: Bonus - Teflon Foot
Teflon is a brand name for a type of plastic that is very smooth and does not have chemical reactions with other substances as defined by the Cambridge dictionary Teflon feet are non-metallic for sewing fabric that will otherwise stick to your normal presser feet, such as leather and vinyl. They come in different styles just like normal presser feet. It is simply nice to have one in your collection just in case.
Closing Thoughts
If you noticed, I didn't mention the All-purpose foot that usually comes already attached to the machine. I consider it essential, yes. But it is a given, so no need to include it in the list.
